Upcoming smart meter/smart grid research from Datamonitor Energy

Mar 19, 2013 (Datamonitor via COMTEX) -- Datamonitor Energy has identified several key issues in the smart meter/smart grid area. In April we will publish research on the issue of "Smart metering: public vs private networks - pros and cons of each approach and the growing acceptance of cellular connectivity in the smart grid." Currently, the preferred method of linking smart meters with the utility's head-end system is to first connect clusters of smart meters in a particular neighborhood together and then backhaul aggregated data from a concentrator to the utility via a variety of different technologies, normally cellular. To date, having individual meters connected to the utility via public cellular networks for backhaul has largely been ignored.

However, the average selling price of cellular-embedded modules has fallen considerably across all M2M market verticals in recent years, while the cost per month of providing cellular airtime to an individual meter has also dropped. This, alongside other advantages (less interference, ease of technological upgrades, higher bandwidth for potential additional services like video surveillance, faster installation times etc.) has meant that more and more utilities are noticing the importance of cellular as a smart grid technology. That said, there are a number of equally compelling arguments in favor of private, utility-built networks which can be confusing for utilities.

This forthcoming research sets out the arguments for and against private and public smart grid networks, scenarios where one network might be more advantageous than another, and examples of both types of deployment across Europe.
