TipSoft can give local law enforcement vital edge

Mar 04, 2013 (The Deming Headlight - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Community members are beginning to embrace different forms of technology to report crimes, but local law enforcement hopes even more will turn to the new TipSoft system to provide them help.

The system has been in place for over a month now and has so far garnered 13 tips from locals. Luna County Sheriff's Office Lt. John Mooradian said most of the tips have come through the Crimestoppers number, (575) 546-7800, which existed before TipSoft was implemented. But he feels with time and locals talking about it, TipSoft will pickup to become a regular tool for law enforcement and community members -- and not just to report crimes.

"We've had narcotics, fraud, arson, even homicide, which ended up being out-of-state," he said of tips the service, which promises anonymity to users.

The TipSoft system takes information from users and redirects it to law enforcement after stripping any kind of identifying information about the person making the report. Users are able to send information by calling, sending a text message, sending an e-mail, using the TipSubmit phone application, or by visiting www.lunacountynm.us and clicking the link at the top of the page. You can send a tip via text to 274673 with the word "LUNATIP" in the message field before the tip itself.

"When I first started, there were will typewriters in the office," he quipped. "Now we utilize laptops, computers, those sorts of things." Once law enforcement receives a tip routed from the TipSoft system, ------ Advertisement ------ they can community amongst themselves to decide the best course of action. An "informal" committee comprised of the LCSO, Deming Police Department and New Mexico State Police stay in regular communication to follow-up on tips and investigations.

Lt. Mooradian says law enforcement is also working with Deming Public Schools to start utilizing the service to send out mass messages to parents. The mass alert messages can also be used to inform the public, via e-mail or text, of road closures, weather, or emergencies.
