CIOs and IT Managers Get a BYOD Wake-Up Call from AppleInTheWorkplace.com

Feb 13, 2013 (M2 PRESSWIRE via COMTEX) -- The major business trends of Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) and Choose Your Own Computer (CYOD) are bringing more Apple devices than ever into the workplace. Most businesses are not yet prepared to manage and control Macs, iPads and iPhones on their networks, like they currently do with PCs, creating security risks that IT professionals must address to protect their networks and businesses.

More than seven out of ten (70%) of office staff are not getting automatic software updates which should be distributed to their Macs, according to the recent AppleInTheWorkplace.com survey of more than 500 IT and knowledge workers.

Despite BYOD, CYOD and the soaring presence of Apple devices in businesses, the management and tools for securing those devices are lagging behind. In fact, 42% of companies have no system or tools in place for Mac security and management - exposing potential security risks.

Even if CIOs haven't implemented a formal BYOD program, the new reality is that there are personal devices in their businesses. Smartphones, iPads, and Macs are there, and the risks that are present may not have been identified.

Forrester Research is reporting that Apple will sell $39 billion (GBP25 billion) in Macs and iPads through 2014. According to the firm's latest report, Apple will sell a massive $11 billion (GBP7 billion) in iPads to the corporate market this year.

As a result of the influx of Apple devices, "IT departments are experiencing the growing reality of Macs across their networks" said Birger Steen, CEO of Parallels.

Parallels Chief Information Officer Christopher McLaughlin-Brooks said, "The option of building out Mac-only management is far too expensive; ideally IT leaders need centralised processes, tools, and a single team that can manage everything easily." To capture a current sense of this growing reality, Parallels launched the Apple-in-the-Workplace Barometer, a crowd-sourced project for IT professionals and everyday employees to gauge where companies stand in terms of BYOD Mac adoption and support. Parallels is calling for employees to take a short survey to discover where their companies rank and gain access to a host of resources for learning about how their company can improve support Macs in the enterprise.

--- Parallels recently launched Parallels Management, a new management suite for Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM) which delivers complete and simplified support of Macs in the enterprise.

With Parallels Management, CIOs and IT administrators can: Manage and control Macs by leveraging their existing Microsoft SCCM infrastructure, resources and talent Gain full visibility into the Macs coming onto their networks, both those they know about and those they don't Gain control and take action on those devices the same as they would with PCs - all while working within the same environment they are accustomed to Easily leverage Mac technologies to have complete security on their Macs Leverage Parallels Desktop for Mac Enterprise Edition to deploy and manage policy-compliant Windows stack to Macs, which is key for employees who need Windows on their desktops and laptops to run mission-critical Windows-only applications About Parallels Parallels is a global leader in hosting and cloud services enablement and desktop virtualization. Founded in 1999, Parallels is a fast-growing company with more than 900 employees in North America, Europe and Asia.
