National Signing Day 2013: West Linn's Evan Voeller signs with Oregon

Feb 06, 2013 (The Oregonian - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- West Linn senior tackle Evan Voeller, a consensus four-star recruit who is rated the No. 193 prospect in the nation by ESPN, did his due diligence in sorting out his numerous football scholarship offers.

He visited California, Washington, UCLA, Stanford and Oregon State, but it was going to be tough to pass up a chance to play at Oregon, where his brother, Dallen, was a walk-on receiver.

He committed to Oregon in September and made it official by signing with the Ducks on Wednesday morning.

"He's a fifth-generation Oregonian. He's got webbed feet," said his father, Jon Voeller.

The 6-foot-4, 285-pound Voeller missed five games with a separated shoulder last season but came back for the final three games. He said his shoulder has completely recovered as he ramps up his weight training in preparation for the upcoming season.

"I'm definitely progressing," Voeller said. "I just want to get down there in the best shape and do the best I possibly can. They say I'll probably redshirt, but nothing is for sure yet. They just said to come down in shape and ready to compete." A tackle throughout his career, Voeller could move inside at Oregon.

"They said they'll try me outside and inside, see where I fit," Voeller said. "Tackle or guard, it doesn't matter. They said they want me to come in around 285 and progress to like 305. I need to get stronger, and also bigger, while staying athletic." West Linn coach Mike Fanger said Voeller is a "great fit" for Oregon's system.

"He's by far the best linemen I've coached," Fanger said. "He's a lean 285. He can put on good weight and become even better." Oregon's coaching change from Chip Kelly to Mark Helfrich last month didn't faze Voeller. It helped that his brother had a positive experience with the team.

"We had a good view of the program from the inside out," Jon Voeller said. "I think we knew all along that Chip was on loan to the Ducks. We have a lot of confidence in the coaching staff.
