Wilson Democratic Party files fraud report

Jan 28, 2013 (The Wilson Daily Times - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The city of Garner has a police report filed Jan. 3 that names the Wilson County Democratic Party as a victim of fraud-obtain money/property by false pretense.

The amount of the fraud listed on the report is $435.52.

The report doesn't say who committed the fraud, but does say the incident took place at 250 Shenstone Blvd., Garner.

The phone book indicates a Staples is located at that address.

The report lists Wilson County Democrat president Asa Gregory as the person reporting the crime.

"We are not sure what to do with the case," said a Garner police official. "We are still waiting to hear from someone about how we should proceed." Gregory did not return phone calls.

Last year, Wilson Democrats had another incident where checks were written from their account, draining it.

Gregory said he closed the account and reopened another account for the party at another bank. He said the party who took the money paid restitution.

Brenda Avery, president of the Women Democrats of Wilson, said when she found out about the first incident, she put a hold on that organization's bank account as she was advised to do when she called the state chair.

Avery said she had no knowledge about this second incident.

"Wow, again What in the world " Avery responded when hearing about the Garner police report. "Nobody has told us anything about this." Avery said there is soon going to be an election of a new president of the Democrats' group for women and she will no longer be the head person. But she said she wants to be sure all is well financially when she leaves office.

"I'm going to check out our account on Monday," Avery said. "There should still be a hold on our account. I put a hold on our account so that money could be deposited, but no money taken out. I have to see if it is the same as when I last put the hold on it." janet@wilsontimes.com -- 265-7847 ___ (c)2013 The Wilson Daily Times (Wilson, N.C.)
