Android sales decline 11% in US: Report [Software & Services] [Times of India]

(Times of India Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) NEW DELHI: iOS remains the top selling smartphone platform in the US, with 53.3% of the market for the 12-week period ending November 25, 2012, says a report released by Kantar Worldpanel ComTech. This marks the first time Apple's mobile platform has surpassed 50% sales share.

During this period, Android sales share declined 10.9% to 41.9% of the market, claims the report. Windows Phone positioned itself at third place with 2.7% of smartphones sold between August 25 and November 25, 2012 in the US, it says.

As per this report, AT&T continues to see success due to the strength of the iPhone 5 and maintains its status as the top selling smartphone carrier with 35.4% of smartphones sold in this 12-week period. Verizon follows in a close second with 31.9% of smartphones sold. Sprint, in third, with 14.5% of sales, sees the largest decrease year-on-year, down 5%.

According to Kantar Worldpanel ComTech, the data comes from its USA consumer panel, which it claims is the largest continuous consumer research mobile phone panel of its kind in the world.

Kantar Worldpanel ComTech analyst Mary-Ann Parlato says, "The iPhone 5 has been successful this period; however, we also see that Apple's older models - iPhone 4S and 4 have also contributed to the growing share of iOS. This is particularly the case for first-time smartphone iPhone buyers where we see the older models still selling well amongst this group." (c) 2013 Bennett, Coleman & Company Limited
