Switch from standard Christmas lights to the newer LED lights. They not only use 17 times less power, but they also are safer because they don't produce the heat that older lights put off.

2. If you have your tree lights on, turn off the regular lights. Enjoy the ambiance; there should be plenty of light to keep you from bumping into the furniture.

3. Only run your lights from dusk until you go to bed. To make it easier, buy a timer, you won't have to remember to turn them on or off.

5. Lastly, turn your thermostat down when you're doing a lot of cooking or have a large number of guests. As we all know, cooking and groups of people can make a house overly toasty.
