Your Christmas Tree Could be Adding Over $100 to Your Electric Bill, States SolarTek

TAMPA, Fla., Dec 20, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE via COMTEX) -- The average six foot Christmas tree will cost you $144.00 to light during the holiday season. Typically a tree of this size has six hundred mini lights. A fifty bulb strand pulls 25 Watts, therefore, if you are paying the national average of $0.12/kWh for electricity and leaving your tree lit for 4 hours a day, your tree will cost you $144.00 extra in a month.

Not to worry, there are ways to get the utility Grinch out of your pocketbook without sacrificing your holiday spirit! Below are a few tips from SolarTek to help cut energy costs! 1. Switch from standard Christmas lights to the newer LED lights. They not only use 17 times less power, but they also are safer because they don't produce the heat that older lights put off.

2. If you have your tree lights on, turn off the regular lights. Enjoy the ambiance; there should be plenty of light to keep you from bumping into the furniture.

3. Only run your lights from dusk until you go to bed. To make it easier, buy a timer, you won't have to remember to turn them on or off.

4. Use candles to light portions of your house. They save energy, smell good, and they give off a welcoming warm glow. Just don't forget to blow them out before you go to sleep.

5. Lastly, turn your thermostat down when you're doing a lot of cooking or have a large number of guests. As we all know, cooking and groups of people can make a house overly toasty. By turning down the thermostat ahead of time, you not only save energy, you also save yourself from uncomfortable heat - especially in those thick holiday sweaters! A few simple changes can make a big difference in your energy bill this season. Utilizing these tips can keep you festive and frugal without your friends even noticing the difference!
