Frontier Village towers need external repairs

Nov 16, 2012 (The Jamestown Sun - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The towers at the entrance of Frontier Village need new siding, new roofing and a fresh coat of paint, the Frontier Village Association agreed at its meeting Thursday.


"They're more or less decorative, and they're used for storage at the moment," said Tina Busche, manager of Frontier Village.

The north and south towers are attached to the gates that lead to the village, and as such are the first part of the village that tourists see when they drive or walk in.

The towers are at least 50 and more likely more than 60 years old, having been moved to their current location from a log cabin-styled motel in Jamestown.

The Frontier Village Association did not yet have a cost estimate for the siding, but did receive a bid for the roofing for close to $4,500.

The Rotary Club in Jamestown agreed to paint the towers when repairs are complete.

Currently, the Buffalo City Tourism Foundation stores some signs inside the towers, but during the FVA meeting, BCTF representatives said they would remove those items and turn the lock and key over to the FVA.

In other news Thursday, the FVA: --agreed to charge three businesses in Frontier Village $150 a year for phone service, a fee similar to what has been charged in the past. Should the businesses purchase their own phone services, the fees would be approximately $75 a month.

--voted to pay $634 for training for FVA greeters and the FVA manager.

--unanimously agreed to move ahead with plans to build an exhibition gallery of digital oil paintings of historical figures, as well as building a stage platform. Chapman Creations would operate the gallery, and Frontier Village would receive part of the profits. Putting up the building will be dependent on receiving grant funds for that purpose in 2013, however. If no grants are issued, the project will not go forward.

--agreed to move forward with the creation of a new sign honoring donors for their gifts.
