U.S. Department of Energy, OSRAM SYLVANIA and more on integrating Solid State Lighting at Smithers Apex's Ecosystems for Solid State Lighting 2012

FALMOUTH, Maine --(Business Wire)--

Chaired by Dr. Makarand Chipalkatti, Senior Director, SSL & Emerging Markets Initiatives, OSRAM SYLVANIA, the 2nd annual Ecosystems for Solid State Lighting 2012 will bring together companies, government, investors and clean energy advocates and others to maximize future opportunities for integrating solid state lighting (SSL). This high-level leadership summit will feature presentations from Emerald Investors, Acuity Brands, Witricity, Encellium and the U.S. Department of Energy and more and will take place on Wednesday, October 10, 2012 in San Diego, CA (News - Alert) as part of pre-conference activities for Smithers Apex's 13th annual LEDs conference and exhibition.

"An enduring and sustainable lighting ecosystem is now possible because of advances in LEDs and OLEDs and in other enabling technologies. Beyond energy savings alone, value added benefits such as emotional quality, building integration, smart and context sensing lighting are now possible," said Dr. Chipalkatti. "To fully realize these benefits, we need a new flexible design philosophy and an adaptable ifrastructure which may include, for example, a low voltage DC grid, wireless controls and communications integration, sophisticated sensing capability and human oriented interfaces. Beyond that, a smooth linkage with intelligent buildings and smart grids will take lighting to the next level."

"With Dr. Chipalkatti's support and guidance, the agenda for Ecosystems for SSL 2012 explores the market drivers for this new sustainable lighting ecosystem and addresses the key issues of energy supply and demand and the technologies that will make this all possible," added Ciaran Little, Head of Events for Smithers Apex (News - Alert). "Gathering together the key players in the lighting ecosystem to collaborate and share ideas has the potential to create and further many revolutionary opportunities. With the lighting industry undergoing rapid change, this summit is a must-attend for anyone interested in how lighting will integrate into future infrastructures."

Ecosystems for Solid State Lighting 2012 will feature 10 presentations and 2 panel presentations covering the future industrial and consumer markets, investment perspectives; and key enabling technologies like intelligent controls, sensors and wireless power; OLED lighting; smart grid and power distribution; and opportunities for solar and other alternative energy sources in lighting applications. Presenters include Dr. James Brodrick, the U.S. Department of Energy; Neil Cameron, Emerald Ventures; David Crockett, Independent Consultant; Jed Dorsheimer, Canaccord Genuity; Eric Haugaard, Cree (News - Alert); David Leonard, Redwood Systems; Dr. Mike Lu, OLED Lighting Design Center, Acuity Brands; Govi Rao, Noveda Technologies; and Rick Schuett, Encellium.
