SEGi offers two `unique' degrees [New Straits Time (Malaysia)]

(New Straits Time (Malaysia) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) LATE last year, SEGi University College developed two one-of-a- kind degrees, which are expected to fulfil the latest workforce needs. These are the Bachelor of Education (hons) and Bachelor of Arts (hons) in English and public relations.

The Bachelor of Education (BEd) aims to provide basics of teaching and in-depth knowledge of at least one area in early childhood education while the Bachelor of Arts (hons) in English and public relations (BEPR) is designed for those interested in pursuing English language studies while developing skills and theoretical knowledge in public relations.

Education is an evergreen sector as Malaysia progresses to become a developed nation. Being an educator can be a rewarding career.

If you love to interact with children or young people and have the patience, education is the field.

The highlight of the BEd is that it creates a pathway for students to specialise in early childhood education along with a degree in education.

Thus, graduates at SEGi are equipped with the skills required to foster positive development and learning in children, whether they are in childcare services or in primary schools.

The BEd covers child development, sociology, indigenous studies and research methods. Skills in interpersonal communication, leadership and special needs are developed in university-based workshops and in workplaces that cater for the needs of children.

With the growing power of knowledge and number of teaching institutes, graduates can expect enormous career options.

The BEd is grounded in the belief that graduates should continue to develop as scholars and teachers, and be practitioners who reflect on their practice, and who are strong advocates for children and their families.

The other exclusive degree is the BEPR, a three-year double- major degree. This course takes a cutting-edge, interdisciplinary approach towards the study of English.

Students are encouraged to think in new and imaginative ways about fiction, drama, poetry and language, in combination with the study of public relations.

During the course, students will develop insights into literary and critical theory, which will complement their study of the huge expansion of new media and desktop publishing.

Creative and visual approaches are emphasised across the course. In the third year, students will complete a research project and undergo an internship.

The research project will help them hone their academic skills for future postgraduate study while the internship gives students authentic working experience in the industry, thus preparing them for employment when they graduate.

Career opportunities for graduates include public relations officers, press agent, media relations manager, events manager and customer service manager, among others.

Graduates of the BEPR can also consider opportunities in marketing and advertising as many of the same skills are used and strong skills in communication could also be used in areas such as journalism, broadcasting and publishing.

Graduates could also opt to work in the field of education as a lecturer, professor and researcher in the English language, linguistics and literature.
