(Associated Press Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) CBS 1Q beats Street on digital, overseas salesLOS ANGELES (AP) _ CBS Corp. on Tuesday said its net income grew 80 percent in the first quarter, as revenue surged on digital licensing deals for its TV shows and overseas sales of reruns. Net profit rose to $363 million, or 54 cents per share, from $202 million, or 29 cents per share, a year ago.

BlackBerry-maker RIM unveils prototypeTORONTO (AP) _ Research In Motion's new chief executive unveiled a newly-designed BlackBerry smartphone prototype powered by a re-imagined operating system _the very software the company has pinned its future on. Thorsten Heins, who took the CEO job in January, on Tuesday revealed features of the BlackBerry 10 operating system running on a prototype device at the company's BlackBerry World conference in Orlando. He provided no update on the software's launch date.

Wall Street Journal remains No. 1 US newspaperNEW YORK (AP) _ U.S. newspapers reported a slight increase in circulation the past year as more readers purchased digital subscriptions, according to a media industry group. Average daily circulation in the six months that ended on March 31, rose nearly 1 percent for the 618 newspapers that participated in the Audit Bureau of Circulations semi-annual study, which was released Tuesday.

UK lawmakers: Rupert Murdoch unfit to lead companyLONDON (AP) _ A committee of British lawmakers called Rupert Murdoch unfit to run his global media empire _ a finding that reflects just how deeply the phone hacking scandal born of his defunct News of the World has shaken the relationship between the press and politics. The divisive ruling Tuesday against Murdoch, his son James and three of their executives also exposed the waning influence of the media tycoon, and could jeopardize his control of a major broadcaster.

Facebook to make it easier to become organ donorNEW YORK (AP) _ Facebook wants to help you share your organs. Users in the United States and the U.K. can enroll as organ donors via links to official registries on the world's biggest social networking site, said CEO Mark Zuckerberg. The links should make it easier for people who want to donate their organs to sign up.

Louis C.K., Bjork among Webby Awards winnersNEW YORK (AP) _ When Louis C.K. released his comedy special "Live at the Beacon Theater" by himself on his website for $5, it was little more than a cautiously optimistic experiment. Less than two weeks later, it had reaped more than $1 million. Already among the most respected stand-ups in the country, Louis C.K. was suddenly a new media trailblazer, too.

Groupon replaces 2 directorsCHICAGO (AP) _ Online deals company Groupon Inc. said Monday that it will replace two board members with executives from American Express Co. and accounting firm Deloitte LLP. The company said Daniel Henry, chief financial officer of American Express and Robert Bass, a vice chairman at financial consulting firm Deloitte, will sit on Groupon's audit committee.

Ex-AOL exec calls Facebook new 'walled garden'BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) _ A former AOL executive says Facebook has a lot in common with the one-time online powerhouse. For years, AOL tried its best to keep users within its walled gardens filled with exclusive articles, chat rooms and other features. That's much the way Facebook operates; you have to sign up and log in to be involved in your friends' lives.

B&N, Microsoft team up on Nook, college businessesNEW YORK (AP) _ Books and bits united Monday as Microsoft provided an infusion of money to help Barnes & Noble compete with top electronic bookseller Amazon. In exchange, Microsoft gets a long-desired foothold in the business of e-books and college textbooks. With Microsoft Corp.'s $300 million investment, the two companies are teaming up to create a subsidiary for Barnes & Noble's e-book and college textbook businesses. Microsoft is taking a 17.6 percent stake in the venture.

Jury begins deliberations in Oracle-Google trialSAN FRANCISCO (AP) _ A jury has started deliberations in a closely watched copyright infringement trial pitting Oracle against Google. The federal case in San Francisco centers on Oracle's allegations that Google's popular Android software for mobile devices relies on technology stolen from Java. That's a programming platform that Oracle Corp. acquired in 2010 as part of its $7.3 billion acquisition of Sun Microsystems.
