Walton seeking 2nd term

CLAREMORE, Apr 15, 2012 (Claremore Daily Progress - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Rogers County Sheriff Scott Walton officially announced his campaign this week as he seeks re-election.

Walton brings more than three decades of experience and passion for public safety to the office.

Starting his career in 1981 with the Tulsa Police Department, Walton worked as a patrol officer, K-9 officer, detective and with multiple special assignments including the Tulsa Police Mounted Patrol, the Street Crimes Unit and the Citizens' Crime Commission to name a few.

Walton also served as one of the first school resource officer during a time when school violence was brought into the national spotlight for the first time.

Although his years of experience with the Tulsa Police Department provided the foundation for his career, Walton's accomplishments during his term as Sheriff highlight his distinguished career.

"I am more proud of the 3 years and 3 months I have served as Rogers County Sheriff than anything," Walton said.

Walton has evaluated the resources of the Sheriff's office to determine how to create a more efficient law enforcement agency.

Focusing on restructuring operations, improving internal communication, improving public service, updating technology, incorporating social media and cracking down on career criminals.

In the past three years Walton has secured and updated the computer system, integrated a new state of the art managing software package, increased record accuracy all while lower budget costs associated with these programs.

Streamlining internal systems, he managed the reduction of several spending contracts saving citizens approximately $100,000 a year.

Not only did he find a way to reduce spending but improve these systems simultaneously.

As a result of these changes inmate telephone usage and commissary purchases provide additional funds to offset the cost of incarceration.

In the field, patrol officers served the largest population in all of the 77 Oklahoma counties.

The office answered more than 29,000 calls for service last year alone. The officers issued 358 warrants annually and issued approximately 532 citations.

Additionally, Walton played a key role in bringing a K-9 unit to Roger County.

Always looking for ways to improve services, Walton initiated and implemented the first "tip line" for the Sheriff's Office.

He used social media to connect with citizens and capture criminals. In 2008 and 2009 the office began a major crack down on narcotic and drug use in the county. This led a cooperative effort with area agencies and ultimately to a record-breaking drug bust. As a result 78 people were arrested and currently the bust has yielded a 100 percent conviction rate. It is Walton's plan to continue this service to the citizens of Rogers County.

During the next five years he will focus on improving the mobile technology available to officers, improving the Sheriff's office website, assisting in the implementation the regional dispatching system and collecting unpaid tax warrants. Walton actively participates in numerous community partnerships including Big Brother, Big Sisters, Crime Commission, Department of Corrections, Healthy Community Partnership, Leadership Rogers County, SafeNet Services and Rogers County Youth Service.

"I love law enforcement and I love Rogers County. This is a perfect blend of two passions," Walton says of serving as the sheriff of his home county. Walton says he will not make empty promises and will continue to fight for the citizens of Rogers County, always focusing on protecting the family, friends and neighbors of our community.
