ViaSat's Exede launches satellite news service

CARLSBAD, Apr 12, 2012 (North County Times - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Those giraffe-sized microwave transmission antennas mounted on television news vans may become obsolete, if a new offering from ViaSat Inc. catches on.

The company's satellite Internet service, Exede, has launched a video product called Exede Newsgathering aimed at on-the-go video journalists.

Exede Newsgathering allows broadcast journalists to "capture, edit and deliver" full high-definition video from the field more cheaply than through traditional satellite services, ViaSat said in a Thursday press release.

"The terminals can either be either be vehicle-mounted or transported in a luggage-sized carrying case," ViaSat said.

Exede Newsgathering is available now in the United States on a "select basis," ViaSat said, and will be generally available by the end of 2012.

ViaSat will demonstrate Exede at a National Association of Broadcasters conference, which runs April 14-19 in Las Vegas.

The Excede service was made possible by ViaSat-1, the company's first satellite. The high-capacity communications satellite was launched in October 2011, with great fanfare from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazhakstan.

Earlier this year, ViaSat launched Exede as a retail product for residential customers who want an alternative to regular cable, DSL or satellite Internet connections.
