10-digit dialing in 919 area code begins Saturday

Mar 30, 2012 (Times-News - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The option to place local calls using 7-digits in the current 919 area code ends today. Beginning Saturday, all local calls in the current 919 area code (which includes westernAlamanceCounty) must be placed using the 10-digit telephone number -- area code plus the seven-digit telephone number.

If a customer attempts to complete a local call using seven digits, the caller will receive an automated message that states that 10-digit dialing must be used to complete the call.

Customers with automatic dialing equipment, including alarm or security systems, abbreviated dialing, or a PBX system, should make the necessary changes to accommodate mandatory 10-digit dialing in the 919/984 area code, the state Utilities Commission said in a press release.

Further, customers in the 252, 336, and 910 area codes with seven-digit Extended Area Service local calling to the current 919 area code will have to dial 10 digits to complete those calls. Dialing three digit numbers such as 211, 311, 411, 511, 611, 711, 811, and 911 will remain the same and will not be impacted by the new 10-digit dialing requirement.

Customers seeking new telephone numbers in the current 919 area code may be assigned the new 984 area code as early as April 30, the release states. Existing telephone numbers in the 919 area code will remain the same.
