Sources: Illinois making run at Butler's Stevens

Mar 25, 2012 (Chicago Tribune - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The Brad Stevens buzz is not going away: Despite the Butler coach's assertion Friday that he had not been contacted by Illinois about a job offer, college basketball sources told the Tribune on Sunday that the Illini have made a serious run at Stevens.

Sources said Illinois is working on a package that matches Steven's current contract in length, securing him until 2021-22, and substantially increasing his salary. One source said the price tag is around $21 million for an 8-year contract.

Illinois initially targeted Virginia Commonwealth coach Shaka Smart, offering a similar salary, according to sources, before he declined to remain with the Rams.

After a report on Peegs.com that Illinois had reached out to Stevens, the coach told ESPN.com, "There is absolutely no truth to it. I have not been contacted." He also told ESPN.com that his representatives had not told him about any contact from Illinois.

"If they have, I don't know anything about it," he said. "Nobody has called me. Here's how I spent my day -- I had individual meetings, I went fishing and I was just drawing chalk on the driveway with my daughter. I came in with all this fishing gear on and my wife told me my phone was blowing up." Stevens has become a hot name for many vacant coaching positions since leading the Bulldogs to the last two NCAA tournament championship games.

After their title game appearance in 2010, Stevens signed a 12-year deal with Butler. While the program did not release the financial details of the contract, reports have speculated his salary is in the $1 million range.

Stevens, 35, has been the coach at Butler since 2007, and the Bulldogs have played in the NCAA tournament every season but this season during his tenure.

Illinois athletic director Mike Thomas is working to find a replacement for Bruce Weber, who was fired on March 9 after missing three of the last five NCAA tournaments.

Other candidates that have either expressed interest in the Illini or the program has considered, according to sources, are Ohio's John Groce, Alabama's Anthony Grant, Florida State's Leonard Hamilton, Stanford's Johnny Dawkins and Duke assistant Jeff Capel.
