340 Ton Rock to Begin Trip From Riverside to LACMA

Feb 26, 2012 (KTLA-TV - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- RIVERSIDE COUNTY -- If you live between Riverside and the heart of Los Angeles, don't get scared when you see a 680,000 pound rock traveling in the dead of night over the next few weeks.

After nearly half a year of delays, the 340-ton granite boulder, one of the largest moved since ancient times, is set to begin the move from a Riverside County quarry on Tuesday.

The monolith will serve as a part of artist Michael Heizer's "Levitated Mass" sculpture at an exhibit the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art, which is slated as "coming soon" on the museum's website.

Traveling at a mind-numbing speed of 5 miles per hour, the 2-story tall boulder will travel through four counties and 22 cities and is expected to reach the museum in the early morning hours of Saturday, March 10.

But don't expect it to cause any traffic jams -- it will only hit the road in its specially-built transporter between the hours of 10 and 11 p.m.

The move is so historic the quarry owner will be throwing a goodbye party for the rock on Tuesday night, complete with a DJ and food trucks.

The boulder "speaks to the expanse of art history, from ancient traditions of creating artworks from megalithic stone, to modern forms of abstract geometries and cutting-edge feats of engineering," the exhibition description reads.
