GWI Deploys Cyan for Major Network Expansion

PETALUMA, CA, Oct 11, 2011 (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX) -- Cyan today announced that GWI, Northern New England's leading telecommunications provider, has deployed Cyan Z-Series(TM) packet-optical transport platforms (P-OTPs) and Cyan 360(TM) multi-layer software support systems to enable rapid services expansion in the region and meet the needs of their customers. With new co-location sites in Boston and New York City, as well as a major role in Maine's Three-Ring Binder project and new managed and hosted offerings for enterprises, GWI is leveraging Cyan's metro and regional solutions to create a Service Level Aware Network(SM) framework for superior services and network efficiency.

"It is an exciting time for GWI right now, as we continue to grow our network, services and customer base throughout New England," said David Allen, vice president of infrastructure at GWI. "Looking towards this future, it is clear that Cyan's solutions, with their modular hardware and software architecture, can handle every network scenario we currently have, and elegantly scale as our needs change.

We have had a great experience working with the Cyan team, the products and their world-class support organization, which have proven very valuable to our team." Cyan Solutions Power a Wide Variety of GWI Expansion Projects With the flexibility of the Z-Series product family, Cyan is able to support GWI's network in a number of deployment settings, including: -- 10 GbE (Gigabit Ethernet) Ring Connecting Portland to Boston and New York City - GWI recently announced the plans for this new phase of their network to provide a stronger connection for the state of Maine to the rest of the country. With Cyan's Z-Series solutions deployed in co-location centers in downtown Boston and Manhattan, Cyan is providing a fully redundant network for GWI's customers. The Z-Series P-OTP integrates high-density, line-rate 10 GbE switching with connection oriented Ethernet (COE) transport to provide low-latency Ethernet performance, guaranteed end-to-end QoS and carrier-grade resiliency.

-- Three Ring Binder Stimulus Project - One of the primary authors of the grant proposal that brought the state-wide Three Ring Binder project, a $25.4 million grant from the U.S. Department of Commerce coupled with an additional $7 million in private funding, GWI is providing services to businesses and homes along the 1,100-mile fiber network.

Connecting many rural areas of the state to Portland, this network provides broadband access to numerous anchor institutions and brings the promise of large economic growth. Cyan's Z-Series products, deployed within a data center in Portland located along the network, provide high capacity and operational efficiency for this growing network. The Z-Series integrates optional multi-degree ROADM and high-density DWDM capabilities to maximize per fiber scalability and flexibility across multi-ring topologies.

-- Expanded and Hosted Business Services - In addition to network expansion, GWI is continuing to innovate new business-class service offerings, highlighted by managed and hosted services, such as hosted IP PBX, storage and back-up and recovery services. With plans for new managed and cloud-based offerings, Cyan will assist GWI in their service delivery by providing the bandwidth, network flexibility and performance needed to meet the needs of their business customers.

"Innovative service providers like GWI are always a pleasure to partner with," said Eric Clelland, Cyan's co-founder and vice president of sales at Cyan. "With a number of expansive projects underway, it is essential that Cyan provides GWI with not only the Z-Series solutions for scaling network capacity as their customer's needs evolve, but also the management tools to tackle these projects efficiently."
