BRIEF: Phone outages leave 19 communities without 911 for hours

DOVER, Mar 23, 2011 (Foster's Daily Democrat - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Phone outages in 19 New Hampshire communities were reported Tuesday night, leaving many residents unable to dial 911 if needed.

Only Comcast customers were been affected by the outages, according to the state's 911 dispatch supervisor. Those affected by the outage could not get a dial tone. The issues began around 3:30 p.m. and were intermittent throughout the evening.

The 19 communities affected were Dover, Durham, Lee, Lebanon, New Boston, Goffstown, Bow, Concord, Merrimack, Rye, Danville, Candia, Amherst, Milford, Hampton, Manchester, Salem, Nashua, and Londonderry.

Residents were asked to use cellphones in case of an emergency.

Service was reinstated by 7 p.m. Tuesday night, according to Comcast representatives. Issues were primarily with long distance and international calling.

"We apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused our customers," said Marc Goodman, Comcast spokesman.

The cause of the outage is still under investigation.
